LET´S TALK DEMOCRACY

HOST TINA JOHNSON

The Birth of "Let's Talk Democracy": Finding Hope in a World Under Siege

Welcome to t "Let's Talk Democracy," the show where we have meaningful conversations on the state of democracy today. I’m your host, Tina Johnson, and I'm here to share why this podcast became a vital necessity for me, and hopefully, for you too.

From Disillusionment to Dialogue

In the aftermath of the 2024 US election and the unsettling rise of far-right nationalism worldwide, I found myself drowning in a sea of frustration, uncertainty, and fear. Like so many who believe in the power of equity and justice—who envision a world where everyone, regardless of race, gender, political affiliation, or religion, is treated with dignity—I was overwhelmed. Democracy, as I understood it, felt like it was slipping through my fingers.

But instead of succumbing to the darkness of disillusionment, I realized something crucial. I needed a space where I could talk about democracy not just in theory, but in real terms, with people who care as much about its future as I do.

That's when the idea for "Let's Talk Democracy" was born. It was an act of self-preservation and a call to action, a way for me to process the political and societal chaos and find the hope I was desperately searching for.

Democracy: An Ongoing Journey and Collaboration

In a world where democracy often feels under siege, I wanted to carve out a space for meaningful dialogue. Democracy isn't just a set of processes; it's an ongoing journey that requires constant learning, growth, and most importantly, collaboration.

I wasn't looking for just any conversation. I wanted to connect with people who are doing the hard work of building healthy democratic environments. I wanted to hear from those who are pushing the boundaries of what democracy can be in innovative and forward-thinking ways.

"Let's Talk Democracy" will feature conversations with a wide variety of people whose efforts and ideas can move us forward and towards a stronger democracy. It’s important to be in dialogue with individuals who represent the diverse range of ideas that are permissible within a democracy. By engaging with these voices—whether they come from experts, activists, community leaders, or everyday citizens—we can begin to see the many facets of democracy and how we can strengthen it together.

Making Democracy Tangible

One of my main goals with the podcast is to make the concept of democracy tangible. It’s easy to get caught up in theoretical debates, but I wanted to ground the conversation in real, actionable practices.

  • What does democracy look like in action?

  • How do we push for a system of governance that's inclusive and just for everyone?

  • How can we apply these principles to the real world, where change often feels slow or impossible?

Through these conversations, the podcast will highlight the best practices and lessons learned from those already making a difference in their communities and beyond. It's an exploration of democracy as something we all shape and redefine together, not just an abstract political concept, but a living, breathing part of our daily lives.

A Call to Fight, Nurture, and Protect

In a time when misinformation spreads like wildfire and populist movements are gaining momentum globally, it's easy to feel disheartened. But "Let's Talk Democracy" is here to remind us that democracy isn't something we can afford to take for granted. It's something we need to fight for, nurture, and protect.

This podcast is a small but significant part of that fight, helping to cultivate hope, share knowledge, and inspire action. At its core, "Let's Talk Democracy" is a reminder that even in the darkest times, there’s always room for dialogue, reflection, and change. And that in itself is an act of democracy. ?￯ᄌマ
